Everyone can do a podcast and create a channel, but not everyone can draw crowds and have subscribers coming back to listen to them. The most commonly asked question, especially among people who are just venturing into the world of podcasts is: ‘What should I talk about?’
As basic as the question may sound, it is a valid one because your topic/theme is what will attract listeners. The possibilities of what to talk about are endless. It can be social issues or serious conversations on emerging topics. Some of the tips to use include:
Do basic research
Before you get into a studio to record your podcast, find out what people are looking for. Check out the most listened to podcasts and find out what the people who produced them are doing. Ask yourself what it is about them that make audiences appreciate them.
Understand the topic you intend to talk about
There is nothing as irritating as listening to a podcast and realizing that the person speaking has no idea what they are talking about. Before you choose a topic, make sure you understand it; and if you do not have a good grasp of it, invite experts or people you think may add more information to your preferred topic. Do not be afraid of experimenting with your guests. You will soon realize that the world is full of interesting people and topics and all you need is nudge them to speak.
Do not copy anyone
The temptation to be like your favorite podcaster can be overwhelming, especially if they are in the same niche/topic you want to talk about. Resist this temptation and be your own person. People are likely to notice when you are not being yourself. Nobody wants to listen to a fake person, so they will bolt and go to someone else. It is not difficult to start being your own person. If you are broke and do not know where to start, approach a bank and get a loan that will grow your podcast.
Be passionate about the topic
If you do a random survey from people who constantly listen to podcasts, they will tell you that they often lean towards podcasts that have a passionate speaker. Before you choose a topic, ask yourself if you are passionate about it enough for you to churn regular content.
Have a unique angle/perspective
What will make you stand out is when you have a unique angle on the topic you intend to talk about. There are thousands of podcasts out there, with big news channels joining the group of people using podcasts to relay messages. You need to stand out and have a unique topic or an interesting way of rendering your podcasts so that you can compete.
